PostSubject: Mega Man 9 (WiiWare, PSN, XBLA)   Thu Jun 26, 2008 8:54 pm

It's been confirmed that Mega Man 9 is on the way, and it will be a WiiWare exclusive. The game will be styled exactly like the classic NES games. Rush will be returning to aid Mega Man, and there are hints that Proto Man might even be playable. ("You'll have to wait and see.")

Mega Man 9 robot masters:
Magma Man
Galaxy Man
Jewel Man
Concrete Man
Hornet Man
Plug Man
Tornado Man
Splash Woman

Quote :

- Dr. Wily returns
- Story: Dr. Wily blames Dr. Light for robot master attacks
- various level hazards: lava, gravity-defying magnetic platforms, Mega Man clones
- attacks gained from Robot Masters: Galaxy Man’s Black Hole Bombs
- development handled by Inti Creates (Mega Man Zero, ZX, Battle Chip Challenge)
- controls: Wiimote NES style, just as you would expect it to be
- Rush returns
- 8-bit style was chosen to ‘please fans’
- 8-bit music
- 8-bit cut-scenes
- difficultly on-par with NES games
- return of classic enemies, as well as new ones
- Will Protoman be playable? “you’ll have to wait and see.”
- hopes in surpassing the quality of Mega Man 2

I don't agree with the choice of making one of the robot masters "Woman". All the several dozen stage bosses of the past eight games have exclusively been "Man". I wouldn't mind the female robot masters if they had been part of the classic series, but they weren't. Some people might argue that it's a nice change from the norm, but if you're wanting something that conforms to the classic series style, such as this game is intended to, it seems a questionable move at best.

Still, I'm glad to see this. I was a huge Mega Man fan back in the NES and SNES eras. It's nice to see a return to the franchise's classic roots.

UPDATE:

Now it's being reported that Mega Man 9 will not be exclusive to WiiWare, but will also appear on PSN and XBLA.

No thanks. Mega Man is just not my thing. Cool for MM fans I guess.

It's supposed to look like an NES game. That was a design choice. They're trying to make it just as though it was part of the original series of games on the NES. Almost the entire classic series appeared on the NES, save for MM7 appearing on the SNES and MM8 on the PSX.

I've updated this and am moving it to General Gaming, as that is now the appropriate home for it.

Got a Mega Man 9 video:

This nails the look, sound, and feel of the classic NES Mega Man games. Not only is it the same low resolution and limited color palettes and identical-looking sprites, but the sprites' animations are just as limited and even the awkward screen scrolling seen when Mega Man falls from one area to the previous one below is just like on the NES.

It's been announced that Mega Man 9 won't be limited to what you initially purchase. There will be DLC available for the game, although we do not yet know what the content will consist of. Personally, I disagree with this move, because it isn't very "classic Mega Man" at all, and a strange choice for a game that's been aimed at being exactly like a traditional NES Mega Man title.

I agree, Ice. That don't sound very Mega Man-like at all.
